Belly Dance-it's not really about the belly. The graceful and fluid movement of arms, hips, torso, and head all create the elegant and enchanting art of raqs sharqi. Raqs sharqi is social and joyous; Andrea takes it to artistic heights with choreography and fantastic costumes!
Andrea has been dancing raqs sharqi since 1996, and has trained in Egypt with some of the top Egyptian teachers including Mona El Said, Freiz Said, Raqia Hassan, Nagwa Sultan, Aida Noor, and Mahmoud Reda. She dances classic Egyptian sharqi as well as Egyptian folkloric dances including the Sa'idi, and Ghawazee styles of upper Egypt. She also incorporates various props such as the shamedaan (candelabrum), assaya (cane), veil, finger cymbals, and sword into her performances.
Performing:
Andrea dances with passion, joy and oneness with the music to move the audience-make them smile, laugh, sigh, and tingle with goose bumps. Her inspirations are the elegant and powerful Egyptian dancers of raqs sharqi's heyday such as Mona El Said, Fifi Abdo, Lucy, Azza Sherif, and Taheyya Carioca. She has performed both as a soloist and in an ensemble in numerous festivals, openings, clubs, and private events in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Hawai'i, and in Egypt.
